CISA ICS Advisory: Siemens Simcenter Nastran

Here’s what this advisory affects, and what to do about it.

Simcenter Nastran is affected by a stack overflow vulnerability that could be triggered when an application binary reads arbitrary string as a file argument. If a user is tricked to run one of the impacted application binary with a malicious string, an attacker could leverage the vulnerability to perform remote code execution in the context of the current process. Siemens has released new versions for the affected products and recommends to update to the latest versions.

Affected products

The advisory names Siemens Simcenter Nastran as the affected product. It does not list specific version numbers. Siemens has already released updated versions that address the issue.

What to do

  • Apply the latest version released by Siemens for all installations of Simcenter Nastran.
  • Determine whether any Simcenter Nastran binaries are present in engineering, simulation, or industrial environments under your control.
  • Follow Siemens’ guidance on the updated releases and any additional mitigations published in their security bulletin.
  • Monitor Siemens’ official product security channel for further updates on this advisory.
  • Where immediate patching is not possible, restrict execution of Simcenter Nastran binaries to trusted inputs only.

Organisations operating industrial simulation or finite element analysis software should treat this as a routine but important engineering workstation update.
