On February 25, 2023, CERT Poland publicly disclosed that a phishing campaign had stolen email addresses and passwords belonging to 68,000 victims. The breach, which occurred in August 2023, involved phishing emails disguised as purchase order confirmations that tricked recipients into handing over their credentials. The official disclosure states that the phishing operation collected email addresses and passwords from 68,000 individuals. CERT Poland identified the campaign’s command-and-control infrastructure and discovered 202 additional phishing campaigns operating from the same server. The authorities dismantled the server, but the harvested credentials had already been exfiltrated. The notification does not specify how many of the 68,000 victims had unique passwords or whether any secondary data such as names or phone numbers were also taken.
Phishing emails masquerading as purchase order confirmations were the delivery method. Victims were directed to fake login pages that captured their credentials in real time. Once collected, the data was stored on the attacker-controlled server that CERT Poland later took offline.
